International Master Lectures
Redditch Chess Club has hosted a number of lectures from IM Robert Bellin.
Robert is an International Master and former British champion based in Walsall. Robert (pictured with photos courtesy of John Saunders) is an extremely strong IM who has earned a GM norm. Robert had a marathon (120 move) win against Viktor Korchnoi at Gibraltar 2007, and he held Boris Gelfand to a draw at the Gibraltar 2017 Congress. As well as his match exploits, Robert is a highly respected coach, and a noted author who has written books including opening books on the Classical Dutch, the Trompowski Opening and Torre Attack, and the Veresov, and a middlegame book entitled 'Test Your Positional Play'.
The first lecture was held in September 2017 and covered minor piece play focussing on knights but also covering bishops, and looking at various types of positional imbalance and plans.
A further lecture was held in May 2018 covering outposts.
We also hosted GM Jonathan Speelman for an Engdgames coaching session in May, 2017. The event was well attended and provided a great opportunity for attendees to improve their game, based on the lecture and supporting discussions. You can find further details on the Endgames Page from the main menu.
The club is planning a number of further events during the 2023/ 2024 season.
